The Christ Church Bremerhaven-Geestemünde is the main Protestant church in Geestemünde . Together with the old rectory, it has been a Bremen monument since 2002 .

history

The Bremen city of Bremerhaven was founded in the Kingdom of Hanover in 1827. Geestemünde's rise began in 1845 with the construction of the harbor on the southern bank of the Geeste . Between 1858 and 1870, Geestendorf's population grew from 1818 to 3,000. The old St. Mary's Church proved to be too small with the rapid population growth in the second half of the 19th century. 1868 - Hanover had been a Prussian province for two years - the church council Geestendorf-Geestemünde entrusted the Hanover consistorial master builder and royal building officer Conrad Wilhelm Hase with the planning of the new church. Construction began in 1872 and the inauguration took place on November 14, 1875. Since inferior mortar had been used for the masonry of the tower spire , it had to be demolished in 1877. The reconstruction was completed in 1880. The opening of the Geestemünde fishing port on November 1st, 1896 began with a service in the Christ Church.

building

Portal with wall rose

The church building is at the intersection of Schillerstrasse (Bremerhaven) and Bismarckstrasse (Bremerhaven) . The three-aisled hall church was built with brick-facing in the neo-Gothic style. It consists of the nave with a retracted eastern choir and the church tower in the west. The aisles are a little lower. The two rows of columns with a clover-leaf cross-section support the simple cross vault . The interior is 29 meters long and 18 meters wide. Almost floor-to-ceiling, Gothic windows structure the outer facade. Stepped buttresses support the outer walls of the nave and choir. A strip of ornamental cornice runs below the gable roof .

tower

The 60 m high, five-story, square West tower is of an octagonal, covered with copper plates spire covered. The struts of the tower lead into four small towers . The facade is divided by alternating normal fired and dark glazed bricks. The two-part portal has an ornamental gable with a wall rose made of bricks.

Old rectory

Rectory and church

The old parsonage with its red stone view was also built according to plans by Hase until around 1875 at Schillerstraße 3 / Kehdinger Straße and given a hipped roof. The two-storey, very functional house with a square floor plan has several gables that serve as entrances. In 1974/75 a major renovation took place.

Furnishing

altar

The altar from around 1875 has a wood-paneled altar table. The wood-carved essay rises behind it. In six arcade niches separated by pairs of columns there are oil paintings with plant ornaments (outside) and four figures from the Old Testament : Aaron and Melchizedek as well as Isaac and Abel . The cross with the Corpus Christi extends almost to the top of the central choir window.

pulpit

The pulpit from the same period is bordered on the parapet, like the arcades of the altar, with a clover-leaf arch. Oil paintings depict the four evangelists .

Bells

The bells were melted into weapons in both world wars. Today's four bells were cast by the Rincker company in 1955. They are tuned to the notes f sharp - a sharp - c sharp as well as the intermediate note g sharp (see also scale ).

Further equipment

The octagonal baptismal font made of sandstone symbolizes the "eighth day of creation", i. H. the one with the resurrection of Christ. The wrought iron Easter candlestick from 1999 was created by the blacksmith Hermann Holsten from Otterstedt (Ottersberg) . The outer ring with twelve candles symbolizes the twelve gates of the heavenly Jerusalem , the four inner candles the four Gospels and the light in the middle the Easter light of Jesus Christ. The old Weule / Bockenem clockwork from 1875 was repaired in the 1950s and replaced by an electro-mechanical clock system. The old clockwork is set up in the entrance area. Around 1952, the glass painter Heinz Lilienthal from Bremen created several windows in the church.

organ

From 1875 to 1966 the first organ from the Peternell company from Seligenthal in Thuringia was located on a gallery about one meter higher at that time .

The new organ, with a richly structured front and front pipes up to five meters high , was inaugurated in 1967. The organ has three manuals and a pedal with 40 registers . It was built by the Hillebrand company in Altwarmbüchen near Hanover and completely overhauled in 2017 by the organ builder Heiko Lorenz. The organ prospect has a curved shape.
