A wavy pattern in wood , leather , marble or meat is referred to as grain (cf. Middle High German mase , “spot, blotchy texture, also blotchy change in the texture of the skin, mark, wound mark”) .

It is also called the wood picture and describes the texture of the cut wood. It occurs very clearly in cuts tangential to the annual rings and in sliced veneers .

In wood processing, the grain is of particular importance in the manufacture of veneers . Only those with a particularly noticeable texture are referred to as grain veneers. As a rule, these occur when cutting wood with strong adhesions, such as those that occur with roots or burls .

The image of cut annual rings that taper off in a parabolic shape on the surface of the wood is referred to as flatness .
