Honkala Island is a 1 km long rock island in the archipelago of the Windmill Islands off the Budd coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . It belongs to the group of Swain Islands and is situated off the southeast coast of the island Burnett Iceland .
The island was mapped using aerial photographs from the US Operation Highjump (1946–1947). In 1957, scientists at Wilkes Station under the direction of the US polar explorer Carl R. Eklund (1909–1962) carried out a survey. Eklund named it after Rudolf Aarne Honkala (1924-2008), chief meteorologist of the winter team at Wilkes Station during the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958).
