Hook and Lateral

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hook and Lateral (also Hook and Ladder ) is a trick play in American football .

During this move, the quarterback throws a pass at a receiver, who plays a lateral pass at a running back walking past him . The other receivers run routes that are intended to lure the opponent to the other side of the field. For a successful execution, the pass from the quarterback to the receiver must be precise. In addition, the receiver should catch the ball with his hands instead of his body in order to ensure that the move is executed quickly. The running back also has to time his running route well in order to run as close as possible and at full speed to the receiver at the perfect time.

The move was invented by Miami-Dolphins - Head Coach Don Shula , who used it for the first time in the AFC Divisional Playoff game against the San Diego Chargers on January 2, 1982. The move was originally called 87 Circle Curl Lateral . The play was part of a game that the Pro Football Hall of Fame dubbed a game of the 1980s. Dolphins quarterback Don Strock threw the pass to Duriel Harris six seconds before the end of the first half , who threw the lateral to Tony Nathan , who ran untouched to the touchdown .
