The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey mapped the area using aerial photographs from Hunting Aerosurveys Ltd. from 1955 to 1957. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the glacier in 1958 after the British Nobel Prize for Medicine Frederick Gowland Hopkins (1861-1947).
