The Horelica Tunnel (Slovakian Tunel Horelica ) is a 605 m long single-tube motorway tunnel in north-western Slovakia near Čadca , on the D3 motorway . It runs under one of the foothills of the Kysucké Beskydy Mountains and bears the name of the Horelica district. The drilled part measures 555 m, the gradient is 4% in the direction of Žilina and the tunnel runs in a semicircle of 5,000 m.

Passage of the Horelica tunnel towards Skalité (2010)

Construction of the tunnel began from the west portal in April 1998, after work on the Oščadnica – Čadca, Bukov section had been in progress for two years. Due to lack of finance and problems with the drilling (tunnel water, geological disturbances), the breakthrough only came in May 2002. The opening ceremony was on October 29, 2004.

The left tunnel tube in the direction of Žilina is currently in two-way traffic and there is a speed limit of 80 km / h. In the direction of the Skalité there is only an escape tunnel.
