The Horner Linde is a distinctive single tree in the Horn-Lehe district of Bremen . The linden tree that stands in the cemetery in front of the Church of the Holy Cross is around 800 years old. This makes it the oldest tree in Bremen and one of the oldest trees in Northern Germany.

history

The Horner linden tree is evidence of the settlement of Horn in the 12th century on an elevated piece of land between Kleiner Wümme and Gete . The linden tree was probably planted shortly after the construction of the first Sanctae Crucis tom Horne chapel . The tree originally served as a court linden tree , here was the court place dinghe tho the horn where the thing was held in the early Middle Ages . The Horner linden tree is first mentioned in a document in 1380.

Trunk of the Horner Linden

The linden tree has grown together from three trunks and is more than four meters in diameter. Until the end of the 1960s, it was surrounded by a large round bench, today by several individual benches. A plaque with an inscription recalls the history of the linden tree and the place:

“The Dutch farmers, who have settled in Horn, Lehe and the Vahr since the beginning of the 12th century, planted these approximately 900 years of linden trees at their church of St. Keuz."
