Hornopirén (formerly Río Negro-Hornopirén ) is a Chilean town in the Región de los Lagos on the Gulf of Ancud . It is located in the province of Palena and is the capital of the municipality of Hualaihué.

In 2012, the town, founded in 1939, had 1,283 inhabitants.

With its road connection to the regional capital of Puerto Montt, 109 kilometers away, and the ferry connection to Caleta Gonzalo , Hornopirén is considered the northern gateway to the Carretera Austral . A road connection from the Carretera Austral to Hornopirén is under construction.
