The Hornopirén volcano is located in the Chilean Andes in the Región de los Lagos . It belongs to the Liquiñe Ofqui Trench , which runs along the western side of the Andes. The last eruption is said to have been in 1835, but this has not been confirmed. The volcano is morphologically a relatively young, predominantly of basalt and andesite existing stratovolcano . Its flanks are mostly wooded.
The name of the volcano comes from the Spanish word horno for stove and Mapudungun for snow pirén . The name Hornopirén thus means compound snow oven.
The volcano is located together with the nearby Apagado (1210 m) and Yate (volcano) (2187 m) volcanoes in the 48,232 hectare Hornopirén National Park .
