Horologion
The term Horologion ( Greek ὡρολόγιον ) denotes:
- Ancient clocks, especially sundials and water clocks
- a book for the Liturgy of the Hours in the Byzantine churches.
The Latinized form Horologium denotes:
- also an antique clock, in particular the Horologium of Augustus on the Martian field in Rome
- the instrument (baton or bell) with which monks were awakened to pray the hours, later also used as a name for tower clocks in monasteries and churches, in particular the astronomical clock on Strasbourg cathedral
- the constellation of the pendulum clock
