The Horsens Klosterkirke (German monastery church Horsens ) is a church built around 1270 in Horsens , which belongs to the Horsens-Gedved Provsti in the diocese of Århus .

history

The Horsens monastery church was built between 1261 and 1275 in the Gothic style from red-brown bricks . The church was enlarged in 1400 and renovated in 1497 due to a fire. It is 46.5 meters long, of which the choir alone occupies 19.7 meters, and 17 meters wide. Marginalized in the Church Middle Ages the Franciscan St. Hans on.

With the Reformation in 1532, the monastery was abandoned. Since then, the church has been used by the Evangelical Lutheran Danish People's Church as a parish church for Horsens, together with the Horsens Vor Frelsers Kirke , which was also built in the 13th century and about 400 meters away . From 1575 onwards, Karen Gyldenstierne (1544–1613), the widow of the landlord Holger Ottesen Rosenkrantz of Boller Castle , built her widow's residence at Stjernholm Castle on the site of the abandoned monastery. The former monastery church now also served as a castle church until the castle was demolished in 1660.

Construction and equipment

Originally the church was decorated with frescoes, but a renovation in 1862 covered most of them. The Gothic altar, which is richly decorated with gold, is adorable. The entrance up to the choir is guarded by cherubins with golden swords of flame. Above it is a cross with a figure of the suffering Christ. The pulpit was only built around 1600 and corresponds more to an early baroque style.
