The Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI) was founded in 2002 at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) to counter the Europe-wide deficits in IT security research. The institute got its name as a thank you for an extensive donation from the Horst Görtz Foundation .

With more than 200 scientists from the fields of electrical engineering and information technology, mathematics and computer science as well as the humanities and social sciences, the HGI is today one of the largest and most renowned university institutions in Europe in the field of IT security. In addition, around 1000 students make the institute the largest training facility for IT security in Europe.

Structure of the HGI

The HGI is managed by a board of directors made up of professors, (academic) staff and student representatives. There is also an advisory board and a board of trustees. Research at the HGI is carried out across faculties and disciplines in working groups and at chairs and is supported by external members.

Research at the institute

As the Research Department of the Ruhr University Bochum, the HGI carries out interdisciplinary research on a national and international level. Almost all aspects of IT security are covered at the institute - from basic research on cryptography and internet security to security for the Internet of Things, user-friendliness and data protection. The graduate colleges at the institute also pursue a decidedly interdisciplinary approach.

In addition, the HGI played a leading role in the design of the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS). The CAIS was founded in 2017 with its headquarters in Bochum to research the social, economic, legal, political and technical aspects of digitization in an interdisciplinary manner.

Since it was founded, the institute has won a large number of science prizes and funding programs that have honored research at the HGI, including three of the highly competitive grants from the European Research Council (ERC Grants).

In addition, the HGI is a founding member of ECRYPT-NET, a European network in the field of cryptography.

Education

RUB did pioneering work in IT security training at an early stage. Today, with around 1000 students, the HGI is one of the largest training institutions for IT security in Europe. The range of courses includes a bachelor's degree and three master's degree programs in which the scientists at the HGI teach:

  • Bachelor's degree in IT security
  • Master's degree in IT security / information technology
  • Master's degree in IT security / networks and systems
  • Part-time master's degree “Applied IT Security” in cooperation with the International School of IT Security - isits AG.

ITS.Connect - the company contact exchange in the field of IT security

Since 2008, the HGI has organized the ITS.Connect company contact fair every year, a nationwide unique platform for networking employers with students and IT security graduates

Practice transfer and networking

In addition to research and studies, the transfer of scientific results into practice and networking with relevant stakeholders is the third pillar on which the institute rests. The HGI is networked with more than 130 partners worldwide - from government agencies to specialized companies and research institutions to global players. At the local level, the HGI has also been coordinating the IT security network nrw.unITS since 2012, which promotes the exchange between IT security actors in North Rhine-Westphalia. Membership in nrw.unITS is free of charge.

Start-up creation and promotion

16 start-ups have emerged since it was founded. The first generation start-ups - zynamics, escrypt, Sirrix and isits - were taken over by the large companies Google, Bosch, Rohde & Schwarz and TÜV Rheinland.

In the Cube 5 - Creating Security project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research , the HGI actively supports students and young founders in setting up companies and developing their products or services until they are ready for the market. Specific events such as the ITS.Pitch bring start-ups in the industry together with investors.
