Horst Gebauer

Horst Gebauer (born August 29, 1913 in Danzig ; † October 30, 1978 ) was a German lawyer and local politician. From 1952 to 1976 he was mayor (from 1971: lord mayor) of the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Bingen .

Life

Gebauer was born into a family from Silesia. He grew up in Breslau , where he attended elementary school and St. Matthias grammar school. After graduating from high school, he began studying law and political science. He spent his legal clerkship in Zobten am Berge and Breslau. Finally, he prepared for his doctorate in law at the Higher Regional Court in Wroclaw.

In 1939 Gebauer's professional career was interrupted when he was drafted into the Wehrmacht , where he served in the rank of captain and as commander of the artillery. During the war against the Soviet Union , he was wounded and taken prisoner. In 1946 he returned to Germany and initially worked as a lawyer in Heidelberg and Mannheim . In the local elections on July 1, 1952, he was elected mayor of the city of Bingen am Rhein and confirmed in his office on June 25, 1964. During his term of office, the reconstruction of the city, extensive housing construction, the settlement of industrial companies, the construction of a new hospital and the incorporation of surrounding areas as part of the municipal reorganization in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Awards

Gebauer was made an honorary citizen of the city of Bingen when he left the office of mayor on July 16, 1976. Below the Rochusberg a street was named after him.
