Downpipe

A down pipe (engl. Y-pipe ) is transferred to a component, the tubes each other. Since two pipes run parallel and then merge into one, it has the shape of a pair of pants.

In automotive engineering, a Y-pipe is used as part of the exhaust system on a motor vehicle. It is also known as a flame tube. The Y-pipe is located in the front part of the exhaust system directly behind the manifold . This is followed by a catalytic converter or front silencer, if any Silencers are always located behind the Y-pipe so as not to hinder the resonances. Y-pipes are only available if the exhaust system brings the exhaust gases together in several stages, for example in a 4-2-1 exhaust system. Then the manifold merges the exhaust gases from four into two pipes. The Y-pipe can already be part of the component in the case of manifolds .

In heating construction, Y-pipes are used in gravity heating systems instead of a T-piece , e.g. B. used from the riser to the connection line. This takes advantage of the fact that a Y-pipe has a lower pressure loss compared to a T-piece, which is an advantage with a pump-free heating system. In rainwater downpipes, Y-pipes are conducive to the run-off of foliage and dirt and prevent blockages.

Y-pipes are also used in hydraulic engineering , for example in hydropower plants to distribute the water coming from a common pressure tunnel to several turbines .
