The Hospital de Santa Maria-Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte (CHLN) in Lisbon is the largest university hospital in Portugal. It is attached to the Medical Faculty of the University of Lisbon and the Institute of Molecular Medicine (Instituto de Medicina Molecular - iMM) and combines the academic and clinical training of medical professionals. The building was designed by the German architect Hermann Distel and erected between 1940 and 1953. It is located in the north of the city on Avenida Prof. Egas Moniz in Campo Grande .

The Santa Maria Hospital is part of the Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte , the Lisbon North Hospital Region, one of the six local hospital groups in the Lisboa e Vale do Tejo region ( Região de Saúde de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo ) of the national health system Serviço Nacional de Saúde .

Egas Moniz building

Its history dates back to 1934, when a law created a commission to build university clinics in Portugal. The Escolar de Lisboa Hospital was planned by Hermann Distel in 1938 and inaugurated on April 27, 1953, after a construction period of 13 years. It was given its current name shortly before completion. Up until then it was one of the largest construction projects in the country. Between 1968 and 1972 the building of the nursing school was built on its site, which is currently called the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Lisboa (Lisbon Higher School of Nursing). In 2004 the Egas Moniz building of the medical faculty was inaugurated, which houses the Institute for Molecular Medicine . In the same year the hospital was given the designation "University Hospital".

In December 2019, the Medical Faculty of the University of Lisbon opened the Reynaldo dos Santos building , which houses a research center for cardiovascular diseases, research laboratories for molecular biology and cell cultures , a multidisciplinary simulation center, experimental surgery and a nutrition laboratory , among other things . The aim of these new research facilities is to increasingly attract foreign students and facilitate the integration of the FMUL into the European research and teaching network.
