Hot Butter was an American synthesizer band founded in 1971, which had an international hit with the instrumental piece Popcorn .

background

The composer and band leader Gershon Kingsley was one of the first in the mid-1960s to experiment with the Moog synthesizer and use the electronic sounds for his compositions. He performed this music with the First Moog Quartet in the USA. His 1969 album Music to Moog By included the piece Pop Corn , which often served as an encore during their appearances.

In early 1972 Denny Jordan, manager of the Musicor label , discovered the song and wanted to release it for the label. He put together a band with the appropriately chosen name Hot Butter . Stan Free, who had already been a member of the First Moog Quartet , played the synthesizer during the recording. Free was a successful session keyboardist and pianist who had played for such artists as Paul Simon , John Denver, and the Monkees , and was frequently hired for film and television. Then there were John Abbot, the brothers Steve and Bill Jerome, Dave Mullaney and Tony Rodriguez. Jordan and Richard Talmadge, son of the label founder Arthur Talmadge, and the Jerome brothers produced the recording.

In the summer of 1972, the piece first became known in France. In July it was number 1 on the charts and became one of the biggest hits of the year. From there the song quickly spread worldwide. In many countries it was at the top of the charts for weeks, for example eight weeks in Australia and ten weeks in Switzerland . In Germany , Norway and the Netherlands , the song was also a number one hit, in Austria , where the official charts were not back until 1973, it was number 2 of the best-selling songs of the year.

When success began to emerge, Hot Butter recorded an entire album with predominantly synthesized covers such as Telstar and Amazing Grace . The album named after the band could still benefit from the first hit. Their second single Apache was only able to make it into the charts in Germany, where the guitar versions of Shadows and Jørgen Ingmann had already been top 10 hits in the early 1960s . A second album with the title More Hot Butter followed with further cover versions, but the singles with Tequila from the Champs and Percolator from Ernie Freeman did not bring them back to the charts. The band continued to exist for some time, but eventually broke up due to the lack of success.
