history

The building complex in which the Hotel Bauer is located can already be seen on a map by Jacopo de 'Barbari from 1500.

The history of the hotel dates back to 1880. The first opening and the name Bauer-Grünwald emerged from the partnership between the hotel director Bauer and the married Austrian Grünwald . In 1898 the Venetian architect Giovanni Sardi was commissioned to expand the hotel. He was also responsible for the Grand Hotel Excelsior built in 1907 . Sardi himself is an important representative of late medieval mannerism . The building of the Hotel Bauer is still an example of the architectural style at the end of the 19th century. During this expansion and redesign, the remains of a factory building in the Gothic style were incorporated into the hotel architecture. In 1901 the construction work was completed and the Palazzo Bauer was opened. After Grünwald's death, his heirs continued to run the Hotel Bauer until 1930.

The first change of ownership took place in 1930. Arnaldo Bennati , a shipbuilder from Liguria , took over the hotel business and carried out the first general renovation. The start of the renovation work is dated 1930 and the completion took place in 1940. This work included the detailed and complete restoration of the palazzo from the 18th century, which was provided with an original facade from the 17th century in Gothic-Byzantine style, as well as the construction of a completely new wing on Campo San Moisè in a contemporary style. Inside the hotel, elegant salons have been set up with leather furniture in warm colors, the walls richly decorated with classic Venetian rococo motifs. One of the biggest innovations was the construction of the ' Settimo Cielo' roof terrace on the seventh floor, which is still one of the highest roof terraces in Venice and is used as one of the property's bars. The installation of air conditioning and central heating was unusual for the time .

In 1999, Francesca Bortolotto Possati, the granddaughter of Arnaldo Bennati, became the hotel's manager. A general renovation of the house took place around the turn of the millennium. Since its completion at the end of 1999, the Bauer has presented itself as a house that has two unique personalities: the Bauer, a 5-star deluxe hotel in the modern wing, and Il Palazzo, an opulent boutique hotel in the palazzo from the 18th century .

In June 2019 the hotel was sold by the Bortolotti Possati family to the US fund Elliott of the entrepreneur Paul Singer . To manage the transition, the farmer has appointed Vincenzo Finizzola, one of the most outstanding hoteliers in Italy, as new general manager and new board member. In 1992, Finizzola successfully expanded Four Seasons in Europe with the opening of a location in Milan , which he then headed as General Manager until 2015 and which became the benchmark for five-star luxury in Italy.

Almost a year later, on May 29, 2020, the hotel was sold again. The new owner is Signa Prime Selection AG, a company from Signa Holding .

Furnishing

The hotel itself has 191 rooms. This is followed by a further 19 rooms in Casa Nova . The property has a total of 210 rooms. The hotel also has a fitness center, a ballroom for 160 people and several bars.
