history

The hotel after it opened

In 1865 Joseph Schrieder opened the Hotel de l'Europe, which he built in Heidelberg city center on the site of the former poor cemetery St. Annen-Kirchhof , which was closed in 1845 . In the following years the hotel changed hands several times and was continuously modernized. At the turn of the 20th century, it already had its own steam power plant for power supply and was one of the most modern of its time. In 1906 Fritz Gabler acquired the hotel and expanded it again extensively. The rooms were given private bathrooms and were heated by central steam heating. In addition, Fritz Gabler had the hotel expanded to include a chauffeur house with twelve garages. Between 1928 and 1929 a side wing was built with 28 rooms, suites and a conference room on the ground floor. In addition, the Hotel Viktoria opposite was acquired.

After the Second World War , the hotels Viktoria, Manheimer Hof and the Hotel Traube in Darmstadt belonging to the Gabler family had to be surrendered. The reason was the destruction in the course of the war or the seizure by occupation troops. Fritz Gabler died in August 1953. In 1955, the Heidelberger Hof , which had been confiscated by the Americans, was returned to his wife Luise Gabler, who reopened it at Easter 1957 after two years of renovation. At the beginning of the 1960s, his grandson Ernst-Friedrich von Kretschmann returned from the USA and took over the management of the hotel together with his wife Sylvia in 1965. Luise Gabler died on December 14, 1981. With the establishment of the hotel operating and leasing company Der Europäische Hof Hotel Europa Heidelberg GmbH on December 20, 1982 Ernst-Friedrich von Kretschmann became sole managing director.

At the turn of the year 2012/2013, Ernst-Friedrich von Kretschmann, after 47 years as managing director, took over the management of the operating and leasing company to his daughter, Dr. Caroline von Kretschmann. Her brother, Oskar von Kretschmann junior, Managing Director at Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt, is involved in the company's development as a shareholder. Sylvia von Kretschmann, mother of Caroline and Oskar von Kretschmann, is the second managing director on the management of the hotel. Ernst-Friedrich von Kretschmann is available to the management as a consultant.

The hotel is a cooperation partner of the Heidelberg Spring .

In 1965 and 1966, the side wing of the building was extended by a third floor with 14 hotel rooms and junior suites. In the following year, the heating from coal to oil, the restaurant and the former dance bar were converted into a cocktail bar. In 1975 the building in Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage 1 / Sofienstraße 29 was built with office and retail space and a public underground car park (120 parking spaces). Between 1986 and 1988 the building at Sofienstraße 27, the garden building, the addition of a fourth floor to the side wing and the expansion of the public underground car park to 200 parking spaces took place. On October 21, 2000 the wellness and fitness area of the hotel "Panorama Spa und Fitness" opened on the fourth and fifth floors with a swimming pool and roof terrace of 600 square meters. The 200 square meter penthouse suite was completed on July 28, 2006. In 2014, the fourth floor of the Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage 1 building with two commercial units and a floor area of 500 square meters was converted into four fully furnished apartments for long-term stays by hotel guests and clinic patients.
