The Hotel Kaiserhof was a German noble hotel in the city of Tanga, part of German East Africa, and was the only hotel on the east coast of Africa when it was founded.
Until Tanga's conquest by the British in 1916, the Imperial Court was Tanga's cultural center. The Germans living in the city met here to celebrate parties and to give invitations.
The former hotel building can still be seen in Tanga. It is located on Independance Avenue , the former Kaiserstrasse .
First World War
During the Battle of Tanga , the "Kaiserhof" was briefly captured by British forces on November 14, 1914 and the Union Jack hoisted on the roof. However, the hotel later had to be abandoned when the British expeditionary forces withdrew.
