The Hotel Post is a listed building at number 26 and is located directly on the main square in Villach .

history

The house was built before 1525. The coat of arms of Hieronymus Kirchpucher on the twisted, late Gothic column at the staircase to the first and second floors of the building reminds of this. In 1548 the house was acquired by Christoph Khevenhüller and converted into the Khevenhüller city palace . In 1553 the adjacent Stöckl was added. From 1629 to 1773 the house was owned by the Widmann family. The building was damaged by fire in 1679. After it was rebuilt, an Gasthaus zur Post is mentioned for the first time in 1748. In 1945 the southern courtyard wing was destroyed again in a bomb attack, and the reconstruction and facade renovation was completed in 1950.

The most famous guests of the house include Emperor Charles V , King Heinrich III. of France (1574), Margaret , the bride of King Philip III. of Spain (1598) and Empress Maria Theresa in the 17th century.

In 2019 the house was bought by an entrepreneur and a hotelier and completely renovated as "Hotel Palais26". 69 renovated rooms, two seminar rooms and an in-house restaurant are being built. The courtyard remains in its splendor and has been expanded with a green guest garden since the beginning of 2020.

Building

The five-axis, three-story street facade is accentuated by a two-story bay window. Stuccoed inscription cartouches with scrollwork and putti reliefs from 1548 are attached to the bay window. In 1679 the Widmann-Orthenburg coat of arms was added. Below you can see the Khevenhüller-Welzer coat of arms, which was created soon after 1548 and is one of the earliest stucco decorations in Austria. There are also two triforic windows above the arched portal .

Inside the building are rooms with groin vaults from the first half of the 16th century. In the hall on the first floor there is a late Gothic star ridge vault.
