history

Hotel Schweizerhof Zurich (2013)

In the last quarter of the 19th century, after the construction of the Zurich main station , the Bahnhofplatz became an important center of Zurich's hotel industry. During this time the first grand hotels were built on Bahnhofplatz.

The hotel was built in two stages between 1877 and 1881 according to the plans of the architects Heinrich Honegger-Näf (1843–1907) and Julius Bosshard. It initially consisted of two buildings at Bahnhofstrasse 93 and Bahnhofplatz 7. In 1880, the Bahnhofstrasse 91 building was integrated into the hotel and in 1893 the Lintheschergasse 24 house was integrated. Thus, the hotel has consisted of four buildings since 1893.

The buildings were rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style in 1908 by Pflegehard and Haefeli . In 1930 there was another renovation by Otto Honegger. The sandstone facade in the typical noble hotel appearance, with caryatid-adorned corner risaliten makes the four buildings appear as one. It is listed as a cultural asset.

On the ground floor of the hotel, Alfred Kuoni opened a travel agency of what later became Kuoni Reisen Holding AG in 1912 .

The artist Alex Walter Diggelmann designed the Red Doorman poster in 1935 , which also serves as the hotel's logo.

In 1947 the Zurich architect and cultural patron Otto Streicher (1887–1968) acquired the hotel from the Swiss Volksbank . Today the hotel is privately owned and has 99 rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a café.
