The Hotel Valira was a hotel in the Andorran municipality of Escaldes-Engordany . Because of its importance in the granite architecture of Andorra, the building has been protected as a monument since 2004 . Today it houses condominiums and the Carmen Thyssen Andorra Museum .

history

The history of the building goes back to the early 1930s when the monks of Montserrat constructed several buildings in the Escaldes area in this granite architecture typical of Andorra. The Valira Hotel, along with the first Antiga Clínica Vilanova hospital in the same architectural style, is a testament to the presence of the monks of Montserrat in Andorra.

The building was designed in 1933 by the architect and Benedictine Celestí Gusí , a student of the Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch , and built according to his plans. It has a rectangular floor plan with five floors. The material used on the outside is granite in the form of irregularly arranged honeycomb blocks. After a fire inside the building, the building was completely modernized and converted into condominiums from 2014. The Carmen Thyssen Andorra Museum is located on the ground floor.
