history

The Bishop of La Laguna in the procession on Good Friday 2014

Holy Week processions , organized and paid for by the brotherhoods (Cofradía or Hermandad), took place in La Laguna shortly after the city was founded in the 16th century. Since the city did not have a bishopric until the 19th century , the processions were limited to individual parishes. The cathedral was later included in the processional routes. In 1953 the Junta de Hermandades y Cofradías was founded. In this association, 26 brotherhoods have come together with the aim of not only coordinating the activities in Semana Santa with each other, but also organizing other celebrations together with the diocesan administration . Another task of the junta is to represent the interests of the brotherhoods in public. The association publishes an extensive brochure every year in which not only the program of the current Semana Santa is printed, but also in an editorial section further information is given.

activities

The activities related to Semana Santa begin before Holy Week and are not limited to religious events. The focus is still on the processions that take place after a sacrament celebration. There are also music events, art exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, poetry readings, a photo competition, handicraft lessons for children, a collection of perishable food for the needy, etc. The Association of Canarian Hotels, Leisure Services and Trade Companies Ocio, Servicio y Comercio, FECAO ), in collaboration with the Committee of the Brotherhoods ( Junta de Hermandades y Cofradías ) , is organizing a “Lent Gastronomic Week” ( Semana Gastronómica de Vigilia ) for the ninth time in 2014 .
