Virgen de Candelaria in the Church of Santo Domingo in La Orotava

Ezequiel de León was born on October 2, 1926 as the first of fourteen children of María del Carmen Domínguez and Ezequiel de León Valencia in the district of Villa Arriba in La Orotava on the island of Tenerife , which is mainly inhabited by craftsmen . During his school days he attended courses at the Escuela Municipal de Artes y Oficios in La Orotava. In addition to his subsequent studies at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , he worked as a draftsman in the office of the architect Tomás Machado y Mendez Fernández de Lugo . From 1949 he received training as a specialist in setting (painting) and gilding at the Escuela de Arte Luján Pérez in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . After returning to Tenerife, he created various religious works in a workshop in his parents' house, such as: B. the sculpture of the Virgen de la Candelaria for the Church of Santo Domingo in La Orotava. Since the focus of his work was in La Laguna and he needed more space, he moved his workshop to Calle Nava y Grimón in downtown La Laguna. Here he was very busy with the restoration and the production of replicas to replace the works of art that were burned in 1964 in the fire of the Church of San Agustín in La Laguna. Examples of the work from this period is the sculpture of Ecce Homo (Señor de la Cañita) and the Cristo de Burgos. This work is now in the Cathedral of La Laguna. Later he settled in La Perdoma, a district of La Orotava. The Cabildo from Tenerife was the client for many of its restoration work . In order to expand the knowledge that was required for this job, the Cabildo enabled him to study at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville from 1976 to 1978 . During his studies he took part in the restoration of the main altar of the Cathedral of Seville and the Paso procesional de la Vera Cruz. Back in La Orotava, the Cabildo de Tenerife appointed him "Director de la restauración de patrimonio insular" (head of restoration work on the island's historical heritage). Since this position was not paid and no funds were available for the tasks, it was only an honorary designation. In the following years he created a large number of religious works of art in his workshop in La Perdoma and from 1995 in the La Luz district together with two of his sons.

In La Orotava, Ezequiel de León Domínguez was also known for his work in the manufacture of the "Alfombras" (carpets of flowers or sand) for Corpus Christi . While working as a draftsman for Tomás Machado y Mendez Fernández de Lugo, he supported him in his task as designer and manager of the work on the approx. 900 m² sand carpet on the square in front of the town hall. From 1989–1992 he was responsible for this carpet himself. In addition, he was regularly involved in a section of the flower carpet of the Corpus Christi procession.

A large part of the artist's work are reproductions in the late baroque style. They were created to replace lost or irreparable works. Due to the use of the artist's knowledge of art history and restoration, his newly created works can also be attributed to earlier stylistic epochs.
