Hôtel des deux mondes (German title: Hotel zu den zwei Welten ) is a play by the French author Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt , which was published in 1999.

action

In a hotel between life and death , where the souls of all coma patients come, people of different origins and different opinions meet in the course of the play. In the Hotel to the Two Worlds, hotel guests are freed from the physical pain that their bodies are currently suffering and must wait either for the doctors' success or for their failure. Depending on the situation, guests take an elevator, the only exit from the hotel, either back to earth, back to life, or high up in the sky, to death.

Characters

  • Julien Portal , a 40 year old journalist. He is an absolute pessimist who does nothing in the world. The reason he gives is that the thought that nothing will come after death prevents him from living his life properly. He believes that after death you go into the same state you were in before birth and that nothing comes. Only when he met the cheerful Laura did he realize that life was worth living after all. The two fall in love, constantly afraid that the other will have to get into the elevator, which would mean that they will never be able to meet again.
  • Marie Martin , a very young cleaning lady who had to work all her life, first to help her mother with her 12 siblings, then to take care of her family. She is still young, but ends up in a coma with a heart attack. She wishes that after death there would be a garden with flowers and trees.
  • The magician Rajapur , a sedate gentleman with all sorts of instinct for humanity, who in search of answers regarding his own fate became a fortune teller.
  • Doctor S ... tells the "guests" of the hotel the current state of their bodies on earth and also guides them to the elevator. Doctor S ... is genderless - Julien and the magician see him / her as a woman and the President see him / her as a man. Doctor S ... has no influence on the direction in which the elevator takes people.
  • President Delbec , a totally selfish personality, for whom reputation and wealth are paramount. Delbec does not question his Christian faith under any circumstances and is therefore of the opinion that the "hotel to the two worlds" cannot exist because it is not mentioned biblically. He is convinced that he is in a hospital or that he is dreaming.
  • Laura , a young woman who has been sick since childhood. This is the third time that Laura is a guest at the Hotel zu den Zwei Welten and is happy that she is relieved of her pain in this place and can walk without aids. She is the epitome of optimism. Your only wish is to fall in love and be loved.
  • Two silent roles; a white man and a white woman. They are the helpers of Doctor S ... and are only heard by the hotel occupants, but each in a different way, which leads to a dispute over the man's name.
