The Sonnenberg hotel complex is a building in Seelisberg in the canton of Uri , Switzerland, which was built in 1875 and operated as a hotel until the end of World War II. It has been owned by the Maharishi European Research University since 1968 .

history

Since the 17th century, many believers have made a pilgrimage to Seelisberg to the Maria Sonnenberg chapel on the rock terrace on the shores of Lake Uri . Around 1840 a hostel for pilgrims was built next to the chapel. This hostel has been expanded several times. In 1875 the "Grand Hôtel and Kurhaus Sonnenberg" designed by the architect Horace Edouard Davinet was built in place of the pilgrims' hostel. Thanks to the steamship station that went into operation in 1854 and the road connection to Schöneck and Treib , the climatic spa facility with its hydrotherapeutic facilities and parks and gardens quickly gained an excellent reputation at home and abroad, from America to Europe and Africa to the East Indies. Around 1900 the facilities were taken over by the "Kuretablissement Sonnenberg auf Seelisberg A.-G." accepted. The company, with equity of just CHF 300,000, issued a bond for CHF 750,000 at 4.5% in 1901 to renovate the spa facilities; In 1910 the company had to be restructured itself and was given the name "Grand Hôtel & Kuretablissement Seelisberg (Sonnenberg) AG". In 1914 it went bankrupt. In 1915, the newly founded "Grand Hôtel & Kurhaus Seelisberg (Sonnenberg) Aktiengesellschaft" took over the cure establishment. The consequences of the economic crisis between the 1st and 2nd World War brought the Kurhaus into financial difficulties due to a lack of guests, and the hotel had to be closed before the end of the 2nd World War.

Reuse

In 1968 Maharishi Mahesh Yogi , the Guru of Transcendental Meditation , stayed in the Grand Hotel for the first time . The canonical master of so-called “Yogic Flying” bought the two hotels “Kulm” and “Sonnenberg” in 1972. and established the headquarters of his "world government of the age of enlightenment" in the "Sonnenberg". This head office was relocated to Vlodrop in the Netherlands in 1992 . Today the Maharishi European Research University is located in the former "Grand Hôtel Sonnenberg".
