The Houlder Bluff is a 300 m high cliff on the north coast of Elephant Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It towers over Point Wild .
The British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton named it during his endurance expedition (1914–1917) believing it was a mountain as Mount Frank Houlder . Scientists from a campaign of the British Joint Services Expedition carried out from 1970 to 1971 clarified the real nature of the object. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee adapted Shackleton's naming accordingly in 1971. It is named after the British entrepreneur Frank Houlder (1867–1936), owner of the steamship company Houlder Line from London , which Shackleton's expedition helped.
