history

The history of the property is closely linked to the nearby Falkland Palace . The land is a spin-off from the palace property with the purchase of additional land. In its current form, the castle bailiff John Bruce put it together in 1821. Bruce began developing the land around the now demolished Nuthill House . Bruce's heirloom married Onesiphorus Tyndall Bruce . The couple hired William Burn to design the House of Falkland, which was built between 1839 and 1844. The surrounding gardens were also laid out during this construction phase.

John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute , acquired the property in 1887. The Marquess hired architects Robert Weir Schultz and William Frame to design the interior in an Arts and Crafts style . The gardens were also revised. During the First World War , the House of Falkland housed a military hospital. In the Second World War, Polish soldiers were housed there. Today it is home to the House of Falkland School .
