action

Teddy reveals that he's making extra money by helping a widow named Helen maintain her beach house in Craggy Neck. Bob offers his help and goes there with his family to bring the garden furniture into the house so that it is protected from the impending storm. Linda and Louise enter the unlocked house, after which the entire family explores it. From looking at photos, Linda realizes that Helen was a second wife, and they believe she killed her husband.

When Teddy arrives at the weekend house, he is shocked to see the Belchers in the house. Linda accuses Helen of murder, but Teddy defends her, saying that her husband fell off the rooftop porch because the railing wasn't tight. Helen couldn't have loosened it up herself, as she didn't have any tools, so Teddy helped her. The family re-enacts the possible murder, with Bob injuring his back and lying on the couch. After the storm starts, Helen arrives there. She gives Bob pain pills , he notices that Teddy has fallen in love with Helen and asks Linda not to blame her any further. Under the influence of the painkiller, he tells Helen that his wife thinks she is a murderer.

Helen takes Linda out onto the rooftop porch and tells her that she didn't kill her husband. Linda backs away from her, slips and falls over the railing, but Helen catches her. The rest of the family arrive there and Louise attacks Helen to save her mother. Linda now no longer believes that Helen is a murderer, meanwhile Teddy falls from the veranda and ends up in the mud instead of on the rocks that were there when Helen's husband died. While the rest of the family are tending to Teddy, Bob, who is still on medication, finds a box in the mud with a hammer and pulled nails. Bob claims Helen hid the box to make Teddy think she had no tools, and thus help her maintain the house. He promises Helen that he will keep this secret to himself.

reception

Caroline Framke from the AV Club rated the episode with an "A−" and wrote:

'Housetrap' is a solid episode that manages to balance some more surreal material with grounded punchlines. This is especially noteworthy if only because it's a destination episode that takes place entirely outside the restaurant, which has either made for some of the strongest episodes or the most uncontrollably zany ones.

“'Housetrap' is a solid episode that keeps the balance between a bit more surreal material and simple punch lines. This is particularly worth mentioning because it is a destination episode that takes place completely outside the restaurant, which has either led to some of the strongest episodes or the most uncontrolled, weirdest. "

The episode scored 1.2 when it first aired and was seen by 2.47 million viewers. This makes it the fourth most watched show on Fox that evening after Brooklyn Nine-Nine , Family Guy and the Simpsons .
