The Wässernach is a fourteen kilometer long right and north-northwest tributary of the Main in Lower Franconia .

geography

course

The Wässernach rises at an altitude of about 365  m above sea level. NN in the Schweinfurter Rhön (Hesselbacher Waldland), in the mixed forest area Rundwiese between Schonungen - Reichmannshausen and Schonungen- akenaken , about 150 m east of the SW 4 leading from the municipality of Wettringen of the Markt Stadtlauringen to Reichmannshausen . Its source in the Reichmannshausen district is only about 300 meters north of the municipality border to Riedbach , which is also the border between the district of Schweinfurt and the district of Haßberge .

It initially flows a good 400 m east-north-east through the Waldgewann Der Rundwiesenschlag , then crosses a forest meadow and then runs almost 200 m on the southern edge of the forest area Der Dachsbau through the area Hasenbirkerseewiesen . There it is fed by a forest stream on its left side. About half a kilometer further down the stream it passes the district boundary and then moves more and more towards the south-east between mixed forests through a narrow meadow in the area surrounding the Riedbach district of Humprechtshausen . Towards the end, it is strengthened by a ditch on both sides. After a short forest crossing it reaches the Riedbacher district Kreuzthal at a small pond , then runs along its western edge, there now crosses the St 2266 , the Schweinfurter Straße of the village , running southwards .

Now moves from a tree gallery and a dirt road accompanied by an agricultural zone to the south-southeast and a small treatment plant over, then changes its course towards south and flows on the eastern edge of the Kreutz Thaler forest belonging hallway fire whipped along. About 300 m later, in the Taschen corridor, the Pfaffengrundgraben runs towards you on your right , which comes from the west from the village ofakenaken , which belongs to Schonungen .

The Wässernach now turns to the southeast, immediately crosses under the B 303 , whereupon a forest stream from the Eselsgrund flows into it south of a small pond from the left . It now flows in a wide valley through the meadows in the kahlen Grund and then passes the border from Rietbach to Schonungen. It then runs south through fields and meadows and flows around the hamlet of Rednershof in a small arc to the east . There you will find a ditch to the right and left. A ditch used to branch off south of the hamlet, which powered a mill about 300 m further down.

Now, still lined with trees and bushes, it moves southwards through the Grundwiesen corridor and then swings to the east at the Die krummen Aecker corridor , where it picks up a field ditch on its right side, and receives the Hainwiesengraben from the east-northeast on its left . The Wässernach then leaves Schonungen and marks the border between Theres on the right and Haßfurt on the left bank for a good four kilometers. It flows in a narrow strip of meadow between the forest meadows Eichenbühl on the right and Heuwiesenrangen on the left side again southwards through a narrow valley east past the Kellerspitze , becomes a little downstream on its left side of the Saugraben coming from the east and immediately afterwards on the on the other side reinforced by a nameless forest stream.

About 400 m south it goes on a southeast course and runs in its floodplain for about one kilometer between the hillside forests. At the height of the Haßfurt district of Sailershausen , which is just under a kilometer east of its valley, it turns to the southwest, and then after about 300 m continues its route in the old direction. Less than a kilometer later it takes on the Gründlesgraben, which comes almost from the north, on your left . South of the Diebesleite , the brook flows from the thief's well into the Wässernach from the right. It now meanders and about half a kilometer down the stream another forest stream flows to it on the same side. The Wässernach now finally crosses the border from Theres to Haßfurt. A little later on the other side of the Eichbühlgraben flows into the Wässernach.

The Wässernach now runs about 200 m south, then turns to the south-east and is fed from the outlets from two sources. It then squeezes through a narrow valley between the wooded slopes of Läusrangen on the right and Steinleinsrangen on the left. After almost half a kilometer, accompanied by the street named after her, she first moves west past three small fish ponds, then east past the local sports field and then past four other fish ponds.

It now reaches the northwestern tip of the Haßfurt district of Wülflingen and, accompanied by thick wood, runs through the Am Mahlgrund corridor on the western edge of the town. At the house of the volunteer fire brigade she enters the village, crosses the Oberthereser Weg and flows through it parallel to Gleißner- and then to Ringgasse . It still crosses under the B 26 and the tracks of the Bamberg – Rottendorf railway line and finally joins almost a hundred meters south of Wülflingen at approximately Main km 353.1 a good kilometer below the Nassach estuary at an altitude of 208  m above sea level. NN from the right and north-northwest into the Main .

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Wässernach covers 35.9 km². It extends as a tube running eastwards at the very beginning, then constantly south-eastwards, around the stream over 11 km to the mouth and across it does not reach a width of 5 km even at the thickest point. The highest point is west of the source on the wooded Grainberg (up to 408  m above sea level ) north of Löffelsterz at a little over 400  m above sea level. NHN . Behind the northern and the longer north-eastern watershed, the Riedbach collects the runoff, finally in the south-east other and smaller tributaries of the upper Main tributary Nassach . From the confluence on, smaller tributaries below compete with the Main in the south-southeast, but on the longer part of the right-hand catchment area border the Steinach, which flows further down into it, with its main upper course Abersfelder Mühlbach and its lower course affluent Wollenbach .

The zone is situated predominantly in the subspace Southern Hesselbacher Woodland of the natural space Hesselbacher Woodland (identical to the scenery Schweinfurter Rhön), the mouth portion close to the Maintal in the subspace Haßfurter Maintal the Steigerwald foothills , all the Mainfränkisches plates count. As the name of the largest part of the natural area suggests, most of the catchment area is forested. On the Wässernach itself are the parish village of Kreuzthal of the municipality of Riedbach and the hamlet of Rednershof of the municipality of Schonungen, then again the estuary of Wülflingen, a district of Haßfurt. In addition, part ofaken inaken, as well as the Kirchdörfer Buch of the community of Theres and Sailershausen of the city of Haßfurt, drain towards the Wässernach. Up to the middle reaches the brook changes twice from the district of Schweinfurt to the district of Haßberge , after which it is in this long municipal boundary from Theres to Haßfurt.

Geology and soil types

The slopes of the upper Wässernach are characterized by the alternation of gray and green clay stones with sandstone , quartzite and sand-lime stone layers of the Lower Keuper . In the western area of the Upper Wässernach, loess and loess loam soils from the Pleistocene can also be found here and there . In this area, the shallow to medium-sized loam and clay soils , such as pseudogleye and brown earth, dominate . The areas are almost completely overgrown with forest.

In the east, on the other hand, there are also sub-areas with fine-grained, yellow-brown to gray-green sandstones that alternate with sand slates and claystones.

From around Rednershof you can find dark to blue-gray limestone banks and gray to olive mudstone layers of the Upper Muschelkalk . Here mostly shallow and stony, loamy-clay soils such as Pararendzinen and Rendzinen emerged . The Wässernach and its lower tributaries have dug deep notch valleys in the Muschelkalk .

The gravelly sandy bottom of the Wässernach is a rich reservoir of groundwater with a relatively high groundwater level. In the rocks of the Keuper and Muschelkalk areas, however, there are hardly any groundwater reserves.

nature and environment

The Wässernach is one of the most natural streams in the Main Franconian Plateau. A number of diversion structures, some of which are impermeable, are, however, particularly in the area of the Unteren Wässernach.

The approximately 1145 hectare nature reserve Wässernach-Tal is an intact and natural biotope . The floodplain of the Wässernach with its valley slopes offers an ideal living space for many animal and plant species.

The area offers diverse areas of life. So we find moist tall herbaceous meadows, lean lowland hay meadows with the meadow foxtail and the large meadow button . Also Luzulo beech forests , woodruff beech forests , bedstraw-oak-hornbeam forests , and ravines slope mixed forests, alluvial forests and the black alder and the European ash are represented.

In the hay meadows and in the hedges on the slopes you will find numerous rare and protected plant species. The scabiosa knapweed , the sun rose , the common finial , the mountain clover , the meadow silge and the rocket- leafed groundwort grow and thrive there .

Many rare animal species also live in the protected area. The bullhead swims in the brook and in the floodplains you can see the blue-winged dragonfly , the dark blue-buttoned ant , the stag beetle , the yellow-bellied toad , the red-backed shrike , the reversible neck and the Bechstein's bat.

The wild boar ring hunts sows in the woods .

freetime and recreation

The Wässernachtal offers space for a range of sports and leisure opportunities.

Traditionally, the water flow takes place on Ascension Day. The running route runs through almost the entire valley.

Part of the Main Cycle Path leads along the Wassernach. The cycle path leads from the mouth of the Wässernach mostly on unpaved roads along the Wässernach and only separates from it again at the level of Sailershausen.

A hiking trail with a distance of twelve kilometers leads through the romantic Wässernach Valley, partly on footpaths. Part of the hiking trail belongs to the Franconian Marienweg . Hikers can fortify themselves in a beer garden in Rednershof.
