The Houston Hometown Jamboree was an American country show broadcast by KNUZ of Houston , Texas .

history

The first edition of the Houston Hometown Jamborees was selected on March 13, 1954. The show was moderated by Paul Hunter and Biff Collie, who also appeared as a comedian and was a popular DJ on KNUZ. In addition to the live radio broadcast from the City Auditorium, the program was also broadcast on local television via KNUZ-TV. The house band of the Houston Hometown Jamborees were the Western Cherokees , a successful country band from Texas. At the beginning of each episode, the chorus of the popular song Y'all Come was played:

"Y'all come (y'all come), y'all come (y'all come)

Oh, y'all come to see us when you can
Y'all come (y'all come), y'all come (y'all come)

Oh, you all come to see us now and then. "

The song was from Arlie Duff , the star of the show at the time. Duff had achieved a top ten hit with the song at the time.

In addition to Duff, the young George Jones was also a member of the show and thus got the opportunity to present himself more widely. Other members of the show included Sonny Burns , Hank Locklin , Bill Potter, Tommy Collins, Patsy Elshire and Tex Cherry. A special feature of the Jamborees was the talent competition sponsored by Starday Records and directed by Jack Starns and his wife. Every musician who won the competition six times in a row got a record deal with Starday.

Like most country shows, the Hometown Jamboree was later discontinued due to the changing entertainment industry, primarily with the rise of television.
