How Could This Go Wrong is a song by Exile . The fast rock song with some disco influences was released as a single in March 1979. The single reached the charts in several European countries, in Germany at number twelve. The cover version by Bernhard Brink , Frei und abrannt , also became known in German-speaking countries .

Origin and content

The song was written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman with Exile lead singer James P. Pennington . The song is about a woman who goes out and watches the dancers shyly, wondering what could go wrong: “She comes alone every night / On her own looking for romance / She stands there watching / While everyone's touching / She'd take a chance / standing there waiting, anticipating ... “Finally, she is addressed and yet finds the right words. The rock song is also instrumented with keyboards and was produced by Mike Chapman in his typical sound.

Publication and reception

The single , released by RAK in March 1979 , contains Being in Love with You Is Easy as the b-side. The single reached number twelve in Germany and was in the charts there for 24 weeks. It reached 25th place in Austria (four weeks) and 46th place in the Netherlands and 24th place in Belgium ( Flanders ). In the US, the single made it to number 88. The song also appeared on some compilations .

On June 25, 1979 , the band played the hit in the television show disco on ZDF .

Version by Bernhard Brink

The song was covered a few times. The first German-language version comes from Bernhard Brink . Its version Frei und Abrannt with a text by René Marcard and Lynda Lee Lawley was produced by Thomas Meisel and was published in May 1979. The text is about lovers who set out as dropouts or hitchhikers with no money in their pockets have: "Free and burned down / I stood with her on the side of the road / come on, let's go / no matter where / the world is big .." After all, however, the two of them work and can still afford "the first".

This version reached number 24 in the German charts and was placed for 12 weeks. Brink sang the song a total of three times in the ZDF hit parade , when it was organized according to sales figures, on July 9, August 6 and September 10, 1979 (places 18, 11 and 7). Although the song was still placed in the following three editions and made it to number four on the ZDF hit parade on October 8, 1979, Brink never sang it again - instead, in the December 10, 1979 edition, his follow-up single I would be as much as you did before. On September 17, 1979 Brink sang Frei and burned down at disco .

More cover versions

Other versions come from, among others, Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari ( Amen ) and the Udo Reichel orchestra.
