Howling Wolf , Cheyenne Ho-na-nist-to ( 1849 - July 5, 1927 in Oklahoma ) was a Cheyenne warrior and graphic artist.

Howling Wolf was one of the warriors of Chief Black Kettle of the southern Cheyenne. Together with him, he was one of the few who survived the Sand Creek massacre . As a prisoner of war in the US Army at Fort Marion , he became an artist in Ledger Art . Howling Wolf remained in captivity for three years.

He was released in 1878 and returned to Oklahoma to live on the Cheyenne Reservation. He originally wanted to stay on the east coast for further education, but an eye condition prevented him from doing so. In 1881 Howling Wolf turned from the habits and lifestyle of white Americans and returned to his Cheyenne traditions. He wore traditional Cheyenne clothing again and consumed peyote as part of Indian rituals.

Howling Wolf died in a car accident in 1927 while driving home to Houston from a Wild West show.
