Hoya betchei is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya betchei is an epiphytic , high climbing with thread-like, winding shoots. The bare shoots are branched, flexible and not very leafy. The spreading leaves are stalked, the fleshy petioles are 1 cm long. The leathery and bare leaf blades are lanceolate-elliptical, 6.5 to 9.5 cm long and in the middle 1.8 to 2.3 cm wide. The base of the spade is rounded, the apex is pointed.

The umbel-shaped, upright inflorescence contains only a few flowers. The bald inflorescence stalk is round in cross section and 5 to 6 cm long. The flower stalks are thin, glabrous and about 3.5 cm long. The sepals are ovate-oblong 2 mm long and end bluntly. The corolla is wide, bell-shaped, the lower half is fused. The corolla lobes are triangular-egg-shaped and end blunt. They are hairy on the inside, the edges are covered with cilia, on the outside they are bare and about 1.1 cm long. The corolla lobes are fleshy, the inner process is elongated and short beak-like, the outer process is elongated and with a longitudinal groove, slightly ascending. The anthers are trapezoidal, the translucent process is egg-shaped and ends bluntly. The anthers protrude a little beyond the tip of the corolla lobes. The stylus head is conical. The pollinia are elongated with a keel on the outside. The caudiculae are short and thin. The corpusculum is rhombic and very small.

Similar Art

Hoya betchei is closely related to Hoya papuanum Schlechter. The corolla are almost the same size, but Hoya betchei differs in the shape of the leaves and the hairy flowers on the inside.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species is Samoa . It occurs there in forests at higher altitudes. E. Betche found them blooming there in December 1880.

Taxonomy

The taxon was originally published in 1908 by Rudolf Schlechter under the name Physostelma betchei . It was later changed to the genus Hoya R.Br. by W. Arthur Whistler. transferred. The Plants of the World online accepts Hoya bandaensis as a valid taxon. Whistler, however, considers Hoya chlorantha to be a synonym for Hoya betchei . Other authors have not followed him in this. Hoya chlorantha Rech. Is accepted online by Plants of the World as a still valid taxon.
