The Hrvatsko šumarsko društvo  ( German : Croatian Forestry Society) has its origins in the Croatian-Slavonian Agricultural Society, which was founded by foresters in Zagreb in 1841 . The forestry department and thus the company was founded on December 26th, 1846 in  Prečec near Zagreb.

The society clearly shaped the forestry in Croatia. It also promoted education and science in this field in Croatia. Her achievements include:

  • Enacted a law on forests in 1852 and strictly applying it.
  • Establishment of a college of agriculture and forestry in  Križevci in 1860.
  • Publication of the first scientific publication on forestry in Southeast Europe. The  Šumarski list ( Forestry Journal ) was first published on January 1, 1877 and is still published today.
  • Preparation and participation in the Millennium Exhibition in Budapest in 1896, where the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia operated  an exhibition room.
  • Construction of the Croatian Forestry House in Zagreb in 1898. In the same year, the Šumarska akademija, a forestry academy, moved into the building. The Academy was the fourth institute at the University of Zagreb .

Today the society has around 2,700 members.
