Hu Haichang ( Chinese  胡海昌 , Pinyin Hú Hǎichāng ; born April 25, 1928 in Hangzhou , † February 21, 2011 in Beijing ) was a Chinese mechanical engineer.

Hu studied civil engineering at Hangzhou University until his graduation in 1950 and was at the Mathematical Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences until 1965 . He then worked in Chinese space travel. In 1993 he was appointed honorary director of the Technical and Scientific Commission for Space Travel of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

A generalized variation principle in elasticity and plasticity theory is named after him and Kyūichirō Washizu .

He also worked on the theory of biharmonic functions , which have application in elasticity theory, and the theory of vibrational dynamics of structures.

He was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and editor of the Chinese Journal of Vibration Engineering and the Chinese Journal of Solid Mechanics.
