Hubert Mehler

Hubert Mehler (* 1934 in Mannheim ) was President of the Bavarian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution from 1987 to 1994 .

Life

Mehler graduated from the Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Mannheim in 1954 and then studied law in Heidelberg and Munich . In 1958 he passed the first state examination there and the second in 1963. He then joined the judicial service in Munich, where he worked as a public prosecutor, district judge and first public prosecutor. On January 1, 1971, he became head of the investigation department of the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office , in August 1974 its deputy president and head of its central department. From December 1, 1979, Mehler was head of the Upper Franconian Police Headquarters and in this capacity made particular efforts to increase road safety and prevent serious motorcycle accidents. From July 15, 1987 to February 28, 1994 he was President of the Bavarian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution. In 2000 it became known that in 1990 he was said to have bought and destroyed several secret Stasi files with compromising details about Franz Josef Strauss offered by ex- Stasi employees . Mehler is said to have justified this with the fact that the contents of the dossiers would have endangered the reputation of the deceased Strauss and future election campaigns.
