Hubrecht Goltzius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hubrecht Goltzius , actually Hubrecht Goltz (* in Hinsbeck ; † first half of the 16th century) was a Dutch painter and founder of a painter dynasty.

Hubrecht Goltz came from Heinsbeek and went from there to Venlo as a painter . According to Karel van Mander , he was an “artful” painter who also had a brother named Sybrecht, who is said to have worked as a sculptor. He had a son Jan (Johann), who was a glass painter and mayor at Königwert, and two daughters, who both married painters. One married a Rüdiger or Rutger from Würzburg , who was called van Weertzburgh because of his origins . Her son was Hubertus Goltzius (also Hubrecht Goltzius the Younger), who used the Latinized form of his grandfather's name.

His grandchildren through his son were the engravers Hendrick Goltzius and Jakob Goltzius , Julius Goltzius probably a great-grandson through Hubertus Goltzius.
