Richard Hugh Cavendish, Baron Cavendish of Furness FRSA (born November 2, 1941 ) is a conservative British politician and large landowner.

biography

Hugh Cavendish attended Eton College in Windsor and worked in banking from 1961 to 1971. In 1978 he was the High Sheriff of Cumbria . In 1988 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts . Under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher , he was appointed Life Peer Baron Cavendish of Furness, of Cartmel in the County of Cumbria in 1990. From 1990 to 1992 he was Lord in Waiting as the Chief Whip of the Government in the House of Lords .

Hugh Cavendish has been married to Grania Maria Caulfield since 1970 and has three children.

Since his grandfather, Lord Frederick Richard Cavendish , a son of William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire , his family has lived in Holker Hall near Cark-in-Cartmel , Cumbria . Hugh Cavendish is third in line of succession to the Duke of Devonshire title . For family heard extensive property to inter alia the Racecourse of the Racecourse Cartmel belongs. Hugh Cavendish and his wife co-chair Cartmel Steeplechases (Holker) Limited , which operates the racecourse. He and his wife are also chairman of Burlington Slate , which is also part of the family's business.

Hugh Cavendish is President of the South Cumbria Rivers Trust , a non-profit organization that works to protect the rivers in southern Cumbria.
