Hugh Darwen

Hugh Darwen (* 1943 in Warwick ) is a British computer scientist . He was fundamentally involved in the development of the theory of the relational database .

Life

Darwen worked at IBM from 1967 to 2004 . From 1978 to 1982 he was chief architect for Business System 12 , a database system that was supposed to implement the principles of the relational model very faithfully. During this time he worked closely with Christopher J. Date and represented IBM on the ISO SQL committees (JTC1 SC32 WG3 Database languages, WG4 SQL / MM). Since 2011 he has taught at the University of Warwick in the Department of Computer Science and is a tutor at the Open University . There he lectures on the language Tutorial D , which he developed together with Chris Date. He published his early works under the pen name Andrew Warden , both an anagram of his surname.

In addition to his work on databases, he has written a book about the card game bridge and runs a website on the subject.
