Chris Date

Chris J. Date (* 1941 ) is a British author, lecturer, researcher and consultant specializing in relational database theory .

biography

Chris Date attended High Wycombe Royal Grammar School from 1951 to 1958 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Cambridge University in 1962 . After completing his studies, he first worked as a programmer for mathematical problems at Leo Computers Ltd. in London, but soon switched to the "Education and Training" division.

In 1966 he received his Masters degree from Cambridge and in 1967 he joined IBM Hursley as a programming instructor . From 1967 to 1974 he was one of the people responsible for the training program at IBM Europe. While at IBM he was involved in the engineering and design of the IBM products SQL / DS and DB2 .

During this time he worked with Edgar F. Codd and Hugh Darwen on developing the concepts of the relational database . In this context he wrote several books on the subject of data management , in particular " Databases, Types, and the Relational Model " in which he presented his concepts for the further development of database systems. His book An Introduction to Database Systems is considered a standard work on the subject.
