Life

He came from the "black line" of the Douglas family . He was the fourth son of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas from his marriage to Beatrice Sinclair, daughter of Henry II. Sinclair , Jarl of Orkney .

In 1445 he was raised to Earl of Ormond , and took part as such for the first time on July 3, 1445 in the Scottish Parliament .

In 1448 he led a Scottish army into the battle of Sark , in which he defeated an English army under Henry Percy, 2nd Earl of Northumberland . While his eldest brother William Douglas, 8th Earl of Douglas made a pilgrimage to Rome in 1450 , Hugh administered its extensive lands.

After King James II of Scotland personally murdered his eldest brother at Stirling Castle in 1452 , Hugh and his family entered into open rebellion against the king. This culminated in the Battle of Arkinholm on May 1, 1455 in which the Douglas was subject to the king. Hugh was captured in that battle and shortly thereafter ostracized and executed for high treason .

Hugh believed to have left a son, Hugh Douglas, who became dean of Brechin Cathedral .
