Hugh Ray

Hugh L. "Shorty" Ray (* 21st September 1884 in Highland Park , Illinois ; † 16th September 1956 ) was an American American football - referees in the National Football League (NFL).

Life

Ray attended the University of Illinois after high school . He then taught technical drawing at a high school in Chicago and was also a coach and referee for several sports. In 1938 he was hired as a referee by the National Football League at the request of George Halas , a position he held until 1952. During this time he introduced important changes in the referee system. The rules were revised and the referees' knowledge was regularly checked. In addition, a situation book was introduced, which tells the referees what to do in which situation. This system is still used today. He died in 1956 and ten years later was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the only referee to date .
