Hugo Coveliers
Hugo Coveliers (born February 21, 1947 in Schelle , Belgium ) is a Belgian politician and lawyer. He was a member of the Belgian Chamber of Deputies from 1985 to 1995 and from 1999 to 2003. From 2003 to 2010 he was a senator .
Life
Coveliers began his political career in the Volksunie , but switched to the Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (VLD) party in 1992 . Within the VLD he advocated collaboration with the Vlaams Belang party .
In 2004 Coveliers founded the Antwerp section of the Flemish liberal think tank Nova Civitas with others .
A dispute with the party leader of the VLD Karel de Gucht led to his expulsion from the party in February 2005. In autumn 2005 he founded the VLOTT party , which works with Vlaams Belang.
