Hugo Merckens
Hugo Merckens (born September 30, 1871 in Eschweiler ; † March 10, 1955 there ) was a German entrepreneur and industrialist.
Life
From 1907 to 1919 Merckens was city councilor in Eschweiler, from 1923 to 1933 honorary councilor and member of the district council . When he was elected in 1925, he belonged to the working group and in 1929 to the German People's Party . On June 14th (other sources: September 30th) 1922 he became fire director of the city of Eschweiler and district fire chief of the district of Aachen . From May 8, 1947, he headed the reconstruction of the Eschweiler volunteer fire brigade , which he joined in 1900 and in which he later became fire chief. He was the owner of the former paint factory Merckens, which was founded in 1815 as the paint factory "August Merckens Nachf."
He was also active in the carnival club " Eschweiler Scharwache 1882 eV ".
On the occasion of his 80th birthday, his hometown granted him honorary citizenship in September 1951. In 2003 a small side street of the "Friedensstraße" not far from the paint factory was named "Hugo-Merckens-Straße".
