Hugo Nevill Money-Coutts, 8th Baron Latymer (March 1, 1926 - November 10, 2003 ) was a British politician (non-party) and peer .

life and career

Money-Coutts was born on March 1, 1926, the only son of Thomas Money-Coutts, 7th Baron Latymer and Patience Margaret Thompson. He came from the Coutts banker dynasty, but did not follow his father and grandfather as director of Coutts after. He attended Eton College and won a tender to natural sciences at Trinity College of Oxford University to study. However, he never took up such studies. At the end of World War II he became a member of the Grenadier Guards and was stationed in Germany . There he served as an intelligence officer and temporarily commanded a firing squad.

After his discharge from the army, he trained as a financial accountant and then worked for the Robert Fleming & Co. bank, which had close ties to Coutts. Money-Coutts played an important role in the development of Save & Prosper , a joint venture that became one of the UK's most successful investment companies. He was also a director of a number of investment and insurance companies with ties to Coutts or Fleming. During this time he was already collecting rare plants . In 1962 he donated his collection to the Royal Horticultural Society .

The following year, giving up his marriage and professional activity, he sailed to Australia , helped develop Mustique , and eventually became an expert in Mediterranean horticulture . He and his future second wife gave up the idea of ​​a trip around the world and moved to Mallorca . It was there that he became interested in horticulture and in 1967 co-founded a flourishing nursery, Vivero Hortus .

Money-Coutts stood up for Mustique for several years and thus supported Colin Tennant, 3rd Baron Glenconner . There he was Managing Director and co-owner of the island's development company. Money-Coutts later returned to Mallorca, where he was a recognized authority in the design and cultivation of gardens suitable for the island's climate.

In 1999 he published The Mediterranean Gardener , a guide to more than 300 plants. In his later years he left Mallorca to live in mainland northern Spain.

Membership in the House of Lords

After the death of his father in 1987, Money-Coutts inherited the title of Baron Latymer and the then associated seat in the House of Lords .

Its membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 . He did not run for one of the remaining seats.

Money-Coutts married Penelope Ann Clare Emmet, daughter of Thomas Addis Emmet and Evelyn Emmet, Baroness Emmet of Amberley , on July 28, 1951 . The divorce took place in 1965. On October 16, 1965, he married her cousin Jinty Ann Calvert. The first marriage had a daughter and two sons, and the second had a son.

Money-Coutts died in November 2003 at the age of 77. His title was inherited by the eldest son, Crispin Money-Coutts, 9th Baron Latymer .
