Hugo Velarde (born May 18, 1958 in La Paz , Bolivia ) is a Berlin-based philosopher, writer, translator, publisher and musician.

Life

After graduating from high school in October 1976 at the humanistic-musical Instituto Eduardo Laredo from Cochabamba-Bolivia, Hugo Velarde came to East Berlin at the beginning of January 1977, where he worked as a construction worker in the »Schadow« brigade at the Berlin Civil Engineering Department (IHB) until July 12, 1977 was. He then completed a one-year German course in preparation for university studies at the Herder Institute in Leipzig. From 1978 to 1980 he studied philosophy at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and since 1980 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . During his studies he paid special attention to the reception of Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony in German-speaking countries, Italy, France, England and Latin America; then the German sociology of knowledge, which in 1983 led to the diploma thesis on Karl Mannheim's ideology and utopia (1929) at the Berlin alma mater.

In 1987 Velarde received his doctorate in the philosophy section of the Humboldt University in Berlin with Karl Mannheim's sociological program - study of the genesis and structure of the sociology of knowledge . In 1989 he became a research assistant at the Institute for Theory, History and Organization of Science at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. Afterwards, the examination of Pierre Bourdieu's “Critique of Theoretical Reason” (in connection with the observation of different socio-cultural practices in their lifeworld analogous performative contradictions), begun at this institute in terms of sociology of knowledge, set in on a freelance basis, which shaped his journalistic activity.

Since 2008 he has worked for the Theater der Zeit publishing house. Until 2011 he was responsible for digitizing the entire inventory of the magazine of the same name since 1946.

From 1999 to 2013 he was the editor of the magazine opponents published by BasisDruck Verlag . Since March 2014 he has been the editor of the successor magazine Abwärts!

Since 1988, Velarde has published articles in various media and formats with a variety of experts and everyday cultures and coordinated various series of events - such as The Future of Drama between 26.-28. January 2017.
