Hugo Vojta (born April 11, 1885 in Tábor , † September 28, 1941 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak soldier, legionnaire and division general . As a leading member of the Obrana národa resistance group , he was a figure in the Czechoslovak resistance against National Socialism . In 1941 he was sentenced to death and executed.

Life

During the First World War Vojta fought in the ranks of the Czechoslovak legions in Russia. After returning to the newly founded Czechoslovakia, he became a professional soldier and, after several courses, commander of various gunners' associations. He was a member of the Board of Directors when the Zbrojovka Brno Arms Works was established .

Immediately after the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in March 1939, he decided to work in the resistance. Together with the generals Alois Eliáš , Josef Bílý , Sergěj Ingr , Bedřich Neumann and Sergej Vojcechovský , he initiated the military resistance group Obrana národa and became the first state commander for Bohemia and then military commander of the Sokol gymnastics movement , which joined the Obrana národa. On February 13, 1940, he was arrested by the Gestapo during an arrest and imprisoned in the Small Fortress Theresienstadt .

After the martial law was declared on September 28, 1941, Vojta was sentenced to death by an order from the new Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich together with Josef Bílý. The sentence was carried out immediately. His successor was Václav Šára .

After the fall of communist rule in 1989, he was posthumously awarded the Czechoslovak War Cross in 1939 . There was no posthumous promotion for unknown reasons.
