Huis van Hilde in Castricum

Huis van Hilde is an archaeological center in the province of North Holland that opened in Castricum , the Netherlands , in early 2015 . The center is named after a figure and facial reconstruction made from a skeleton find known as Hilde von Castricum.

story

The preservation and management of archaeological finds is the responsibility of the provinces in the Netherlands. In North Holland there used to be a depot for this purpose in the Mercurius rice mill in Wormer , but this did not meet the requirements of the Monument Protection Act. In 2011 it was decided to build a new Archaeological Information Center in Castricum, the construction of which started in September 2013. A little over a year later, the first exhibits were brought to the new center: two sarcophagi from the 12th century that were found in Etersheim and Hem. The center was opened in mid-January 2015.

architecture

The building designed by Fons Verheijen has an elongated pavilion freely modeled on medieval farmhouses, the remains of which have been found in North Holland soil. It has an area of 4,200 m², including 2,200 m² for the depot, which includes special areas for the optimal storage of wood and metals. Parts of the building, including the central dome, were covered with sand and grass so that the building blends in with the dune landscape behind. In addition, space was made available for small restaurants and events.

The Huis van Hilde houses a central permanent exhibition with archaeological finds from the time of the Neanderthals . The highlights of the exhibition are the two sarcophagi , three historical canoes and ten figures that were made on the basis of facial reconstructions, among other things. The collections of the archaeological center include numerous everyday objects of daily life in late antiquity , especially ceramics - but also metallic and organic - and pieces that are mostly kept in the depot. They are cataloged via a database and are available to science. The Huis van Hilde endeavors to be able to exhibit around 1,000 objects on a permanent basis. In addition, space is created for temporary exhibitions and educational activities.

Digital collection

Hilde's house has set itself the goal of making part of the collection of archaeological finds and the associated documentation digitally accessible. For this purpose, the company's own website was expanded to include a database and search functions, on which images and metadata are offered under Creative Commons licenses .

Hilda

Figure of Hilde von Castricum

Before the construction of the Oosterbuurt district in Castricum, archaeological investigations were carried out in 1995, during which several thousand finds were made. One of them was the skeleton of a woman who probably lived in the middle of the fourth century. Research shows that she lived to be 24 to 30 years old and may have grown up in eastern Germany . The Medical Center of the University of Utrecht carried out scans of the skull, on the basis of which the archaeologist and anthropologist Maja d'Hollosy made a facial reconstruction, which was named Hilde. Hilde was then featured in a book on archeology in North Holland, published in 2006 under the title Het Land van Hilde .
