The emergence of the Human Potential Movement (abbreviation HPM ) is closely related to humanistic psychology and strongly influenced by the theories of Abraham Maslow about mental health. Important impulses for the HPM came from Fritz Perls , Victor Frankl and Carl Rogers , among others .

history

The Human Potential Movement originated in the 1960s and started out primarily in the US state of California. It refers to the findings of humanistic psychology and grew out of the idea that many people have as yet untapped development potential. The movement is based on the premise that people can improve their quality of life by developing their development potential and live a life of emotional balance, creativity and fulfillment.

The HPM u. a. from the basic assumptions derived from Maslow's theories:

  • Desires for self-development and the fulfillment of meaning in life are inherent in every human being and represent the highest expression of human existence.
  • It is important to strengthen these instead of adapting people to the needs of society.
  • The development of the potential for self-realization leads to greater maturity, freedom from fear, health, self-fulfillment and meaning in life.
  • The focus is on the here-and-now (instead of childhood, life story or dealing with old conflicts), on the healthy parts of people (instead of any disturbances that need to be eliminated) and on promoting resources and growth .
  • The holistic approach deals with all levels of people, not only with their existential needs ( physiological needs , safety needs , love needs , esteem needs , needs for self-actualization, → see Maslow's hierarchy of needs ), but also with their intellectuality, creativity, Spirituality and its need for self-actualization.

From this a culture of mutual promotion of potential developed within the supporters, which was connected with the assumption that in the long term this would have a positive effect on society as a whole. With its ideas, the HPM significantly influenced the further development in numerous humanistic-existentialist psychotherapy directions and positive psychotherapy .

HPM also formed one of the roots that later influenced the emergence of New Age and related movements. The hippie culture and psychedelic movement were also related. a. on the HPM. Later the coach and bestselling author Antony Robbins also took up thoughts of the HPM in his work in the neuroassociative conditioning he founded . The ideas of the HPM have subsequently also been linked by some supporters of the HPM with questionable large group awareness training and instant healing .
